SUMMARY:Games at The Dali: Exquisite Corpse
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our Dali/Duchamp special exhibition\, we invite you to Games at The Dali. On select Thursdays during the exhibit (February 10–May 27)\, we celebrate the game playing (and gamesmanship) of Dali and Duchamp\, artistic giants and friends who shared a mutual influence\, despite many superficial and aesthetic differences. In teams of three\, you will create irrational\, dreamlike creatures playing the surrealist game known as “Exquisite Corpse\,” invented in part by Marcel Duchamp. Prizes will be awarded to the most surreal creations. Artistic skills are not necessary to participate – all you need is your creativity. Art supplies will be provided and a cash bar will be open. \nCheck-in: 5:30-6pm\nEvent: 6-8pm\nCost: $5 (Parking is free after 5pm on Thursdays\, as available)\nCost does not include entry into the galleries.\nPre-registration required. SUMMARY:Coffee with a Curator: Surrealism & Crime
DESCRIPTION:Coffee with a Curator is a focused\, theme-oriented presentation on a variety of Dali-related topics. The talk is presented by one of The Dali Museum’s Curatorial/Education team or an invited speaker. \nMargo Hammond: Surrealism & Crime\nThe history of Surrealism is littered with corpses. Painting dismembered bodies\, posing mannequins to look like dead bodies and writing about assassinations as acts of transgressive valor\, the surrealists often focused on criminality and violence. The surrealists called their favorite parlor game “The Exquisite Corpse.” In this coffee talk\, author and editor Margo Hammond examines the surrealists’ connection with crime\, including the possibility that their aesthetic theories inspired a real life crime: the unsolved Black Dahlia murder. \nCost: Free (parking is free for members as available; $10 parking for nonmembers)\nLocation: Raymond James Community Room (overflow seating available in the Will Raymund Theater) \nSupported by the City of St. Petersburg Arts and Culture Grant and Cafe Gala.
